The 3rd batch of Cream of Kentucky pushes the age statement up, as former Four Roses master distiller Jim Rutledge continues to slowly release a limited supply of Kentucky bourbon worthy of the rebirth of Cream of Kentucky. Cream of Kentucky 12.3 Years Old is the second release from J.W. Rutledge Distillery, founded by former Four Roses master distiller Jim Rutledge. Construction on the distillery is expected to break ground in 2019, and when construction is completed, the distillery will produce straight bourbon and rye whiskey the “old-fashioned way”. In the meantime, Jim Rutledge is sourcing and blending whiskey from other distilleries to put out new releases under the J.W. Rutledge brands, starting with Cream of Kentucky. Sweet fruit flavors are proudly on display and are reinforced by additional notes of caramel, vanilla, and milk chocolate. This is nicely balanced against a hearty oak and nut element. Overall a decent amount of complexity and mingling of flavors makes this an interesting palate and one that’s quite fun to drink.
